Women in the Driver’s Seat: Jenny Riggs

Every Monday for the past 5 weeks, we have featured a female leader from the Penske organization who is empowering women in the automotive industry and paving the road for the next generation of female leaders. From their earliest interest in the industry to their proudest moments, you’ve learned how these women got their start, who influenced them the most, and how they are helping change the face of the industry in positive ways.
 
Featured Female Leader: Jenny Riggs – Area Controller
“Learn as many job functions within a dealership as you can. There are so many different aspects to every dealership, the more you know, the more valuable you are.”
 
Jenny Riggs has worked in the automotive industry for 32 years and currently serves as the Area Controller for the Indianapolis and Upper Midwest areas.  In her current role, Jenny is responsible for managing over 30 employees, accurately reporting financial statements for nine general ledgers, and making sure it is done following PAG policies and procedures, within a good internal control environment. “I really enjoy assisting customers and training employees on new job functions and tasks,” she says.
 
Jenny has had several memorable moments throughout her career, but she is most proud of the position she holds today. “I never dreamed of being the Area Controller, especially for the number of dealerships I currently work with. I am also proud of the role I played when Penske purchased dealerships, where I assisted with the buy/sell closing process and office set-up once the stores became PAG dealerships.”
 
The best career advice Jenny received was from her previous controller who told her to “always learn from your mistakes” and “when learning a new task or position, don’t take notes that you can understand today, take notes that you cannot misunderstand tomorrow.” It seemed simple at the time, but it is something Jenny still tells employees today.  For women considering a career in the automotive industry, Jenny advises, “Learn as many job functions within a dealership as you can. The more you know, the more valuable you are.”
 
Jenny has noticed more opportunities for women in the automotive industry over the last several years. “I think it is important that women have an equal opportunity to succeed in any job,” she says. In five years, Jenny hopes to still be working in the automotive industry, either in the same role or in a position where she can assist and train employees.  “I am very fortunate to have been given the opportunities to work in a variety of positions at many different levels.  I think much of my success is due to the fact that I learned as many job functions within the accounting office as I could, and that helped me excel in my career.”
 
In her spare time, Jenny enjoys spending time with her friends and family.

Featured Female Leader: Collier Lewis – Area Admin Atlanta Management

“When there is an opportunity to speak up, do it. Your voice is important and vital.”

Collier Lewis has worked in the automotive industry for over four years. Collier started with Penske Automotive Group in 2016 as a part time receptionist and moved into a finance administrator position after graduating college. Collier is currently the Area Admin for the Atlanta Management team where she assists with the Atlanta stores. Collier has enjoyed learning about the different aspects of the dealership and what her peers do on daily basis. She enjoys the ever-changing nature of the automotive industry and finds satisfaction in interacting with customers. “I have always been a people person and wanted to work in an industry where no day is like the day before,” she says. One of Collier’s proudest professional achievements was being asked to join the Penske management training program. “It showed me that the company really valued me and I saw that I had a great opportunity to grow within the organization,” she says. Collier doesn’t hesitate when asked who has been the biggest influence on her career. “My mother has always supported my dreams and told me I could do it.”

Collier advises young women considering a career in automotive industry to “speak up when there is an opportunity. Most importantly, be confident and know that you can do anything that you put your mind to. We have to power to take over this industry by leaps and bounds.” Asked how the automotive industry landscape has changed to engage more women, Collier says: “The automotive industry has evolved and offers a lot of opportunity for women. More and more women are working in service drives, finance roles, and general manager positions.” In the next five years, Collier hopes to be working in a Human Resources role.

In her free time, Collier enjoys spending time outdoors, trying new restaurants and hiking. She will graduate with her MBA in HR next Fall.

Penske Technicians Honored through Elite Technician Program

Now in its fourth year, the annual Penske Elite Technician Program recognizes and rewards Penske Automotive Group’s top performing technicians for their outstanding credentials, skills and contributions. To be eligible, technicians must be nominated by management and meet specific program requirements.  132 Penske technicians including 14 finalists were designated as Elite Technicians for the 2019 program. 

After meeting program requirements and advancing through a challenging technical exam, 14 technicians qualified to compete for top honors at the 2019 Penske Elite Tech Challenge in Mooresville, N.C., May 16-19.

During their stay in Mooresville, the 14 brand finalists enjoyed several fun activities and competitions including a pit stop demonstration at the Team Penske racing facility, go-kart racing, and a tour of the NASCAR Hall of Fame with a visit to Roger Penske’s new exhibit. All brand finalists were awarded a ticket to the 2019 Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series All-Star race at Charlotte Motor Speedway.

As part of the Elite Tech Challenge, the 14 finalists completed a final timed exam during their visit to the UTI training center. Two days later, at the 2019 NASCAR Monster Energy All-Star race, Penske Automotive Group honored the technicians and celebrated the “2019 Penske Automotive Elite Technician of the Year,” Danny Ng from Ferrari Maserati of Central New Jersey, who was the top scorer on the exam. Along with top honors, Danny was awarded a premium prize package.

Penske Automotive Group’s “Service Matters” campaign raises over $1 million for Paralyzed Veterans of America in 2018

Donations total more than $4 million over last four years

WASHINGTON (Feb. 5, 2019) — Penske Automotive Group raised over $1 million dollars for Paralyzed Veterans of America (PVA) through its 2018 “Service Matters” campaign. Since the beginning of this partnership in 2015, Penske Automotive Group has raised more than $4 million to support PVA.

Throughout 2018, Penske Automotive Group’s dealerships encouraged customers to donate toward its “Service Matters” campaign. To maximize the donation, Penske Automotive Group matched each donation up to $500,000. All funds raised go toward supporting PVA’s programs and services, including: veterans’ benefits assistance; legislative and advocacy efforts; employment counseling; medical services and health policy guidance; investment in spinal cord injury and disease research and education; adaptive sports programs; and architectural support—all of which are provided free of charge to veterans and their families.

With the huge success of the 2018 “Service Matters” campaign, raising a total of $1,063,877, Penske Automotive Group will continue its partnership with PVA for a fifth consecutive year.

“Penske Automotive Group was proud to team up with Paralyzed Veterans of America for this important fundraising campaign in 2018, and we look forward to partnering with the organization again in 2019,” said Robert H. Kurnick Jr., president of Penske Automotive Group. “We thank our employees and our customers for their continuous efforts to support our mission—to serve those who have served us—and for contributing to the life-changing work for veterans with disabilities carried out by Paralyzed Veterans of America.”

PENSKE AUTOMOTIVE GROUP HONORS ITS ELITE TECHNICIANS

The annual Penske Elite Technician Program, introduced in 2016, recognizes and rewards Penske Automotive Group’s top performing technicians for their outstanding credentials, skills and contributions. To be eligible, technicians must be nominated by management and meet specific program criteria including the highest level of training and brand certification, exceptional production and proficiency metrics, outstanding and verifiable credentials, and other important qualities. 129 Penske technicians including 9 finalists, were designated as Elite Technicians for the 2018 program.

After meeting program requirements and advancing through a challenging technical exam, nine technicians qualified to compete for top honors at the 2018 Penske Elite Tech Challenge in Mooresville, N.C., March 26-28.

During their stay in Mooresville, the nine finalists enjoyed several fun activities and competitions including a tour of the Universal Technical Institute NASCAR training center; a pit stop competition at the Team Penske race shop with members of the Team Penske pit crew; a GoKart racing competition at a local track; and a tour of the NASCAR Hall of Fame in Charlotte, N.C.

As part of the Elite Tech Challenge, the nine finalists completed a final timed exam during their visit to the UTI training center. The following evening, at an awards banquet, Penske Automotive Group honored the technicians and celebrated the “2018 Penske Automotive Elite Technician of the Year,” Jared Taylor from Peter Pan BMW, who was the top scorer on the exam. Along with top honors, Jared was awarded a premium prize package that included two passes for a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity with Team Penske as their guests at a 2018 racing event – an experience that never disappoints.
