The Search For The Ultimate Automotive Enthusiast Begins

In a first-of-its kind contest, Shell is teaming-up with top automotive enthusiast judges to find the person that best embodies what being the ultimate automotive enthusiast means. Whether it is a person who spends more time tuning and pampering their vehicle than driving it, touring the country in search of their dream ride or just cruising to show it off, or simply someone who spends much of their leisure time paying homage to all things automotive, the Shell V-Power “Ultimate Enthusiast” Contest aims to find the best of the best.

From October 23 to December 3, enthusiasts are invited to share why they are the Ultimate Enthusiast at www.shell.us/ultimateenthusiast. One Grand Prize winner and a guest will receive an Ultimate Enthusiast week in Italy where they’ll have the chance to explore the country’s historic sites and rich automotive history, including an exclusive Ferrari experience in the Prancing Horse’s home town of Maranello, Italy.

Judges include Roger Penske, founder and chairman of the Penske Corporation; Craig Jackson, chairman and CEO of Barrett-Jackson Auction Company; Eddie Alterman, editor-in-chief of Car and Driver; Larry Webster, editor-in-chief of Road & Track; Alan Taylor, host of Motor Trend Radio; and Tony Marini, executive director of Hot August Nights.

Penske Automotive Acquires BMW/MINI Dealerships Expands Presence in Orange County, California

Penske Automotive Group, Inc. an international automotive retailer, today announced that the Company has acquired Savage BMW/MINI of Ontario, located in Ontario, California. SavageBMW/MINI of Ontario is ranked in the top twenty-five percent of BMW dealerships in the United States according to new unit volume. The acquired dealerships are expected to contribute approximately $125 million in annualized revenue.

Savage BMW has been named a BMW Center of Excellence and has built a solid reputation for customer service and satisfaction within the marketplace. Penske Automotive Group President Robert H. Team Penske’s Brad Keselowski wins in Joliet, claims top spot in Sprint Cup Championship standings for Roger Penske!

Penske, the iconic IndyCar owner who has yet to win a NASCAR championship, watched Penske Racing driver Will Power lose the IndyCar title to Ryan Hunter-Reay at Auto Club Speedway in Fontana, Calif., on Saturday night. Power blew a 17-point lead in the standings when he wrecked, enabling Hunter-Reay to win the title.

But Penske knows how important the Chase is, and his spirits lifted when Penske Racing’s Brad Keselowski beat Jimmie Johnson by three seconds. The victory puts Keselowski in the points lead by three over Johnson and eight over defending Cup champion Tony Stewart.

Chase driver Kasey Kahne finished third, Kyle Busch was fourth and Ryan Newman fifth. Stewart was sixth.

Keselowski led 76 laps, but Johnson started on the pole and led a whopping 172. It was almost reminiscent of Johnson’s victory in July at the Brickyard 400, where he led nearly the whole race.

But Keselowski figured Johnson out and kept the five-time champion winless in the Cup series at Chicagoland.

Hertz and Penske Enter Franchise Agreement for Memphis Market

The Hertz Corp. and Penske Automotive Group Inc. announced today the signing of a franchise agreement in the Memphis, Tenn. market for Penske Automotive Group to join Hertz’s network.

This partnership is part of Hertz’s companywide initiative aimed at increasing its presence in the off-airport car rental market and is part of Hertz’s strategy to transition select corporate markets to franchisee operations, the announcement states.

“By partnering with Penske, Hertz will be able to accelerate our growth in key U.S. markets and further strengthen our franchising network,” said Mark P. Frissora, chairman and CEO for Hertz. “Over time, we expect to see our franchising relationship grow into other selected markets throughout the country.”

Upon completion of the closing conditions, Penske Automotive Group will purchase assets of Hertz’s existing Memphis market, in which Penske will operate more than 15 airport and off-airport locations. Hertz said that it will supply Penske the resources it needs to expand its market presence, while ensuring that the services and products provided to customers meet Hertz’s standards.

“We are confident that the commercial and operating synergies between Hertz’s car rental and Penske’s car dealership businesses will benefit our dealership network and Hertz’s rental operations,” said Roger Penske, chairman and CEO for Penske Automotive Group.

Analysts also expect more franchisee announcements from Hertz. “This Penske agreement, in and of itself, is not a needle-mover,” writes Fred Lowrance, senior analyst with Avondale Partners. “However, it is the first significant indicator that we are aware of that suggests HTZ (Hertz’s) franchising initiative may be picking up speed. We expect more announcements heading into year-end.”

Lowrance states that franchise opportunities will help with Hertz’s targeted margin improvements. “Evidence of progress on this front is particularly important because we view the franchising opportunity — and the reduced asset-intensity of the business model that comes with it — as one of the key drivers of continued margin improvement required for HTZ [Hertz] to achieve its impressive 2014 standalone growth and earnings targets.”

Team Penske 1-2 Finish At Sonoma : Ryan Briscoe wins race, Will Power takes control of title chase

SONOMA — A good day for Team Penske isn’t all that unusual at Sonoma raceway, given the team’s three victories coming into Sunday’s GoPro Indy Grand Prix of Sonoma.

But No. 4 was something that couldn’t have been scripted.

Ryan Briscoe beat teammate Will Power, but Power was the one who left Sonoma with the IndyCar season championship squarely in his sights after a wild sequence of events late in the race severely damaged Ryan Hunter-Reay’s title hopes.

Power, who had won the past two races at Sonoma and the last three poles, stretched his five-point championship lead over Hunter-Reay entering the weekend to 36 points with only two events left: Sunday’s street race in Baltimore (which he won last year) and the season finale at Auto Club Speedway in Fontana on Sept. 15.

Even so, Power would have been happier had he won this race, especially after leading 57 of the 85 laps.

“I can’t help but be a little disappointed, but happy because I got a good points buffer,” Power said.

Power dominated the first three quarters of a mostly uneventful race, with Briscoe in second place most of the way.

Then the race — and perhaps the championship — was determined during the most dramatic period of the day.

Power pitted on Lap 65, but his crew had trouble getting on his right rear tire. He rejoined the race in second place behind Briscoe.

On the next lap, Sebastien Bourdais, who had just pitted and was running a strong third, lost control and ran wide into the dirt in Turn 9. He slid back onto the track and took out rookie Josef Newgarden, bringing out the first caution in IndyCar since the Toronto race in early July.

Under caution, Briscoe was able to pit and keep the lead when Power got caught behind traffic that was slower than usual, even by yellow-flag standards.

On the double-file restart on Lap 74, Briscoe held his lead over Power. But in Turn 7, Hunter-Reay, who had moved up to third, was spun from behind by Alex Tagliani, bringing out another caution and putting Hunter-Reay a lap down.

On the next restart, Hunter-Reay made avoidable contact with E.J. Viso and was hit with a drive-through penalty.

That doomed Hunter-Reay to an 18th-place finish, rather than a spot on the podium. After the race, he was seen having an animated conversation in the pits with Tagliani.

“It was the usual Tag,” Hunter-Reay said. “He just got in there, locked up the brakes and got into the back of me. I can’t tell you how frustrated I am after the engine problems (last race at Mid-Ohio), and then this. We had a podium. I can’t get over it right now. It’s unreal.”

Meanwhile, Briscoe cruised home with his first victory since June 2010 at Texas Motor Speedway. In his past five races at Sonoma, he has finished second, second, fourth, third and finally, first.

“It’s great to get the win,” Briscoe said. “You get into a slump, you think, ‘Man, am I ever going to win again?’ So this is definitely lifting, a confidence builder.

Volkswagen has teamed up with the Discovery Channel—and marine biologist Luke Tipple—for Discovery Channel’s annual ‘Shark Week’ event, to create an ‘underwater car’, a shark observation cage.

The one-of-a-kind ‘Volkswagen Beetle Mobile Shark Cage’ is a shark cage in the shape of the iconic Beetle, which divers can use to drive along the ocean floor and interact with sharks.

The mobile Beetle has: a structure made from tubular alumium, alloy wheels, iconic bug headlights, a full-air system that divers can hook up to, and propellers.

“We wanted the integration to be authentic and fit naturally with the Volkswagen brand, imprinting our signature style on Shark Week,” Justin Osborne, general manager of marketing communications for Volkswagen America, said. “The Beetle Shark Cage plays on the silhouettes of two of the most iconic images, the shark fin and the Volkswagen Beetle.”
