Penske Automotive Group Honors Its Elite Technicians

Elite Tech 2017 Badge

The annual Penske Elite Technician Program, introduced in 2016, recognizes and rewards Penske Automotive Group’s top performing technicians for their outstanding credentials, skills and contributions. To be eligible, technicians must be nominated by management and meet specific program criteria including the highest level of training and brand certification, exceptional production and proficiency metrics, outstanding and verifiable credentials, and other important qualities.

After meeting program requirements and advancing through a challenging technical exam, nine technicians qualified to compete for top honors at the 2017 Penske Elite Tech Challenge in Mooresville, N.C., March 20-23.

During their stay in Mooresville, the finalists enjoyed several fun activities and competitions including a tour of the Universal Technical Institute NASCAR training center; a pit stop competition at the Team Penske race shop with members of the Team Penske pit crew; a GoKart racing competition at a local track; and a tour of the NASCAR Hall of Fame in Charlotte, N.C.

Pictured is the 2017 Penske Automotive Elite Technician of the Year, Joe Hunter from Motorwerks BMW.

As part of the Elite Tech Challenge, the nine finalists completed a final timed exam during their visit to the UTI training center on March 21. The following evening, at an awards banquet, representatives from the Universal Technical Institute, Shell-Pennzoil, Snap-on Tools, PPG Industries, Cintas, BG Products, Team Penske and Penske Automotive Group honored the technicians and celebrated the “2017 Penske Automotive Elite Technician of the Year,” Joe Hunter from Motorwerks BMW, who was the top scorer on the exam.

Along with top honors, Joe, who has been a technician for 18 years and with Penske Automotive Group for 4 ½ years, was awarded an experience for two at the Detroit Grand Prix in June.  Included in his prize package for the Detroit Grand Prix were airfare, a hotel stay in downtown Detroit, special seating and paddock passes, among other things.

Simon Pagenaud and Team Penske Win GoPro Grand Prix of Sonoma

blog-image

Simon Pagenaud and the No. 22 Hewlett Packard Enterprises Chevrolet team dropped the hammer this past weekend in a convincing victory at the GoPro Grand Prix of Sonoma, securing the 2016 Verizon IndyCar Series championship while highlighting Team Penske’s 50th anniversary season.

“It’s unbelievable,” Pagenaud said. “What a race! So much emotion right now to be honest it’s hard to find the words. My whole career has been about this, about today and getting to this point, getting to this level… It’s such a great feeling.” (Read more here.)

It was all Pagenaud, all day, as the Frenchman led 76 of 85 laps for his fifth win of the season and his first Verizon IndyCar Series title, permanently etching his name in the history books as a champion. His win marked Team Penske’s 14th Indy car championship and the organization’s 187th victory in an Indy car competition— the most of any team in history.

“Obviously when you join a team like Team Penske, they deliver the best cars,” Pagenaud said. “They provide you the best equipment out there. As a driver, it’s your job to do the best job possible. When you’re (competing) against Power, Castroneves and Montoya, these guys are the benchmark. It’s about getting the most out of yourself because obviously we all have the same cars.” (Read more here.)

Heading into the race, Pagenaud held a 44-point advantage over teammate Will Power, the only other driver eligible for the 2016 title. Power ran second to Pagenaud for much of the race until a clutch malfunction slowed his No. 12 Verizon Chevrolet on lap 36, knocking the Australian driver eight laps off pace while repairs were completed. Power finished 20th, earning him second place in the championship, 124 points behind Pagenaud. Other Team Penske teammate, Helio Castroneves, finished the race seventh, which allowed him to secure third place in the championship.

The results gave Team Penske its second 1 -2 -3 championship finish, the first coming in 1994 with Al Unser Jr., Emerson Fittipaldi and Paul Tracy. Pagenaud is the ninth Penske driver to be crowned champion and the second in three years (Power took the title in 2014). Team Penske’s landmark 50th anniversary season featured an impressive 10 wins, 11 poles and 22 podiums in 16 races in 2016 Verizon IndyCar Series competition. The team continues its pursuit of the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series championship with both Brad Keselowski and Joey Logano competing in the Chase this fall.

Team Penske to Celebrate 50th Anniversary in 2016

MOORESVILLE, NC (January 4, 2016) – Team Penske unveiled its plans today for the year-long celebration of its 50th Anniversary in motorsports during 2016. The team will wave the green flag on the commemorative activities by displaying an exhibit at the NASCAR Hall of Fame in Charlotte, NC in January. “Celebrating the 50th Anniversary of Team Penske” will be a multi-faceted program that will reach into retail and merchandise, media and fan engagement, sponsor partnerships and special events. Team Penske’s Media Tour at the NASCAR Hall of Fame on January 20 and an employee and partner celebration featuring current and past Team Penske drivers that same evening will serve as the official start of the historic year.

The January 20th date will coincide with the debut of an exhibit at the NASCAR Hall of Fame dedicated to celebrating the team’s history. The special exhibit will not only focus on Team Penske’s successful NASCAR program, but will showcase cars spanning multiple racing disciplines from 1966 to the present and will include never before seen artifacts and trophies from the Team Penske archives. An additional exhibit focused on Team Penske will debut in February at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway Hall of Fame Museum 100 days before the 100th running of the Indianapolis 500 in May. That display will not only feature cars representing each Team Penske driver’s first win at the speedway, but will also include vehicles, artifacts and trophies from Penske’s rich 50-year history.

The team will also announce the inaugural inductions into the Team Penske Hall of Fame, a yearly-honor that will be made eligible to current and former drivers and employees who have made a significant impact on the team and its history.

On January 18, Team Penske will be featured in a special pull-out section of the Sports Business Journal, a publication that selected the team as a finalist for its prestigious “Sports Team of the Year” award in 2014. Roger Penske will also be featured as one of the six annual Sports Business Champions in the publication.

“We are very proud of all Team Penske has accomplished over the last 50 years. The celebration of our 50th anniversary is truly a credit to the hard work, preparation and execution of our teams over the years,” said Roger Penske. “The 2016 season will be a special one in our history as we have the opportunity to reflect back on our heritage while continuing to produce and win at a high level each week on the race track.”

Beginning as Roger Penske Racing in 1966, competing in sports car and endurance events, Team Penske has grown into one of the most successful racing teams – and sports teams – in the world. The team won its class in the 24 Hours of Daytona in its first start and since then Team Penske has produced a combined 424 wins, 487 pole positions and 28 national championships. Those totals include a historic 16 Indianapolis 500 victories, two Daytona 500 wins and the distinction of being the last American constructor to win a Formula One race, coming in 1976 with driver John Watson.

Noted automotive website Jalopnik recently named Team Penske the greatest American racing team of all time.

An extensive media plan will be implemented in 2016 and will bring many of the historic races, drivers, team members and pivotal moments of Team Penske’s past back to the forefront through interviews and features that will target broadcast, print and online media. Already, more than 70 in-depth interviews with current and former drivers, employees, sponsors and other influencers in motorsports have been collected and will be distributed throughout the year.

Team Penske will celebrate the 50th Anniversary all year long on its social media channels as well, utilizing the #Penske50 hashtag. Over the course of the season, Team Penske will feature current and former driver biographies, historic photographs and videos and will closely examine some of the events that have shaped the team over the years. Team Penske will also partner with Ford and Shell to crown “Team Penske’s Ultimate Fan” in a sweepstakes that will award some unique prizing. Details on the contest will be announced in the coming days.

Current partners will incorporate the newly-created Team Penske 50th anniversary logo and team history into point of sale and advertising throughout the 2016 season. Many Team Penske sponsors have been a crucial part of the success of the organization and several partners have been associated with the team for 25 years or longer. To further enhance the celebration, many partners will incorporate special paint schemes to be displayed at both NASCAR and INDYCAR events throughout the coming season.
