Simon Pagenaud and Team Penske Win GoPro Grand Prix of Sonoma

Simon Pagenaud and the No. 22 Hewlett Packard Enterprises Chevrolet team dropped the hammer this past weekend in a convincing victory at the GoPro Grand Prix of Sonoma, securing the 2016 Verizon IndyCar Series championship while highlighting Team Penske’s 50th anniversary season.

“It’s unbelievable,” Pagenaud said. “What a race! So much emotion right now to be honest it’s hard to find the words. My whole career has been about this, about today and getting to this point, getting to this level… It’s such a great feeling.” (Read more here.)

It was all Pagenaud, all day, as the Frenchman led 76 of 85 laps for his fifth win of the season and his first Verizon IndyCar Series title, permanently etching his name in the history books as a champion. His win marked Team Penske’s 14th Indy car championship and the organization’s 187th victory in an Indy car competition— the most of any team in history.

“Obviously when you join a team like Team Penske, they deliver the best cars,” Pagenaud said. “They provide you the best equipment out there. As a driver, it’s your job to do the best job possible. When you’re (competing) against Power, Castroneves and Montoya, these guys are the benchmark. It’s about getting the most out of yourself because obviously we all have the same cars.” (Read more here.)

Heading into the race, Pagenaud held a 44-point advantage over teammate Will Power, the only other driver eligible for the 2016 title. Power ran second to Pagenaud for much of the race until a clutch malfunction slowed his No. 12 Verizon Chevrolet on lap 36, knocking the Australian driver eight laps off pace while repairs were completed. Power finished 20th, earning him second place in the championship, 124 points behind Pagenaud. Other Team Penske teammate, Helio Castroneves, finished the race seventh, which allowed him to secure third place in the championship.

The results gave Team Penske its second 1 -2 -3 championship finish, the first coming in 1994 with Al Unser Jr., Emerson Fittipaldi and Paul Tracy. Pagenaud is the ninth Penske driver to be crowned champion and the second in three years (Power took the title in 2014). Team Penske’s landmark 50th anniversary season featured an impressive 10 wins, 11 poles and 22 podiums in 16 races in 2016 Verizon IndyCar Series competition. The team continues its pursuit of the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series championship with both Brad Keselowski and Joey Logano competing in the Chase this fall.

Women in the Driver’s Seat

Penske women are paving the road for future women looking to enter the automotive industry.

Long considered a male-dominated business, the automotive industry has begun to evolve into a more inclusive and equitable environment for women in recent years. Penske has been a silent leader in this progression, with more women taking on leadership positions than ever before.

Terri Mulcahey
Terri Mulcahey

Terri Mulcahey, Executive Vice President of Marketing & Business Development, has been redefining what it means to be a woman in the auto industry ever since she started her career    in the parts department installing electronic parts catalogs with Reynolds and Reynolds after college.

“Those were the days when there weren’t many women in the parts area,” said Mulcahey. “I had to quickly become accustomed to that environment or I wasn’t going to last very long.”

Mulcahey, who was recently named one of the 100 Leading Women in the North American Auto Industry, eventually went on to spearhead Penske Automotive Group’s corporate marketing department. While laying the foundation for the PAG standards used today, Mulcahey fostered a customer-first approach that has been a critical factor in the success and growth of the department.

“The first thing I did was visit the stores, because the GMs, sales managers and parts associates, those are my customers,” said Mulcahey. “That is what I try to remind the team—we work for the people that work at the dealerships. Our job is to help them be more successful.”

Tracy Gurnett
Tracy Gurnett

One of the first people Mulcahey met after moving to Penske was Tracy Gurnett, General Manager at MINI of Austin. Gurnett was a receptionist at the time and worked her way up the ranks to eventually become a GM.

“Some people can be intimidated by a woman leader, but I’ve been fortunate,” said Gurnett. “My mentors—Bernie Wolfe [Executive Vice President—West Region], Roger Penske and Rob Kurnick—they leave me speechless at the opportunities I’ve been given.”

Not only is the status of women in executive and managerial positions changing, but their roles within service departments are changing as well. Penske’s Elizabeth Wintercorn, a refinish technician at Fayetteville Autopark, jumped at the opportunity to enter the automotive industry when she learned about a local technical institute with a collision repair program. She became the first woman to complete the program and graduate in collision repair.

“One of the biggest challenges was being taught by an old-school instructor who didn’t believe that women had a place outside of the kitchen,” said Wintercorn. “Every day was a struggle to be given tasks that didn’t have to do with sweeping the shop.”
However, despite the adversity she faced within the industry, Wintercorn emboldened others like her saying she would “encourage other ladies to take up the challenge of taking courses.”

Laura Cone

Over at United BMW Roswell, Laura Cone and Staci Kenny are also breaking the traditional gender norms with their roles as technicians. When Cone and Kenny entered the auto industry years ago, both held office positions before realizing their true ambitions lay in the garage.

“As a woman in a male-dominated arena, I just wanted to be equal and considered one of the guys,” said Kenny. “It took time and experience, but I think I have [it].”

Cone echoed Kenny’s sentiments saying, “I feel like one of the guys. The guys I work with are very respectable and treat me like anybody else… If a girl is interested in this kind of job, go for it.”

In striving for equality, Cone and Kenny have achieved admiration for their skills in their work.

“Girls are very detail-oriented people,” said Cone. “You would be surprised by how much that is

Staci Kenny

valued in this kind of work.”

Cone, Kenny and Jennifer Rodgers, a lube technician at Landers Chevrolet, each offered the same piece of advice for women interested in a career as a technician: Go for it.

“Get into it and do your best,” said Rodgers. “Don’t let anyone stop you.”

As the role of women in the auto industry continues to grow, the females at Penske provide a strong example of leadership to both men and women.

“We work for an organization that recognizes talent and ability based on results and dedication, not based on your sex,” said Gurnett. “There is a definite progression happening, and the leadership at PAG is helping to make that happen.”

Penske Automotive Group at the 2016 National Veterans Wheelchair Games

Penske Automotive Group recently attended the 2016 National Veterans Wheelchair Games in Salt Lake City, Utah. Veterans from all over the world compete for gold!

While at the games, we had the opportunity to meet one of the veterans, and executive director for Paralyzed Veterans of America, Sherman Gillums, Jr. to find out what has inspired him since his injury in 2004.

“Coming to the games was the life changing moment for me. It was the first time I was around hundreds of people just like me. The energy and rush of adrenaline of competing gave me the motivation to go back to school, go back to work and most importantly have fun.

It’s natural after a catastrophic injury to experience a period of depression. When you are [at the wheelchair games], it changes your perspective. The nurses and therapists try to keep you motivated but it isn’t the same as being with nearly six hundred other veterans facing the same challenges you are. There is no greater motivation than that.”

“In fact,” laughed Gillums, “At the games, the ‘walkers’ are the minority!”

Hearing his story and then talking with several other veterans at the games, we heard how much Gillums has helped them. He is truly paying it forward.

He is appreciative of all of the support from Paralyzed Veterans of America (Paralyzed Veterans) and everyone who donates and supports through their partner program.

Last year Penske Automotive Group dealerships raised $913,000 in support of Paralyzed Veterans, and we are hoping to exceed that total this year! In support of the campaign throughout 2016, Penske Automotive Group is matching each donation – up to $500,000. As of July 2016, with the Penske Automotive Group match, $668,000 has been raised toward the campaign! Thank you to everyone that has donated!

Donations can be made at any Penske Automotive Group dealership. Click here to find the dealership closest to you or you can also donate by clicking here.

Brands bring their A-Game to the New York Auto Show

Springtime is the best time for checking out what cool new concepts auto brands have been cooking up! One of our favorite expos is the New York Auto Show, which happened this year from March 25-April 3. Here are a few of our favorite cars that made their debut!

  1. The Lincoln Navigator Concept

The Lincoln Navigator was described as a “living room on wheels.” If that doesn’t sound like a comfortable ride, we don’t know what does!

  1. Nissan GT-R

The new GT-R takes a fan favorite and packs in even more power.

  1. Audi R8 Spyder

The convertible design of the new Audi doesn’t stop it from having impressive acceleration – it gets to 62 mph in 3.6 seconds! The R8 Spyder will go on sale later this year.

  1. Porsche Boxster 718 S

The new Boxster starts out at $56,000 and will become available sometime in June.
