Donations total more than $4 million over last four years

WASHINGTON (Feb. 5, 2019) — Penske Automotive Group raised over $1 million dollars for Paralyzed Veterans of America (PVA) through its 2018 “Service Matters” campaign. Since the beginning of this partnership in 2015, Penske Automotive Group has raised more than $4 million to support PVA.

Throughout 2018, Penske Automotive Group’s dealerships encouraged customers to donate toward its “Service Matters” campaign. To maximize the donation, Penske Automotive Group matched each donation up to $500,000. All funds raised go toward supporting PVA’s programs and services, including: veterans’ benefits assistance; legislative and advocacy efforts; employment counseling; medical services and health policy guidance; investment in spinal cord injury and disease research and education; adaptive sports programs; and architectural support—all of which are provided free of charge to veterans and their families.

Roger Penske Inducted Into NASCAR Hall of Fame

NASCAR Hall of Fame Banner

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (February 1, 2019) – Recognizing the accomplishments of a man that has made an indelible impact on the sport for more than 55 years, Roger Penske was inducted into the NASCAR Hall of Fame on Friday evening.

Penske was among five legends of stock car racing that were enshrined at the NASCAR Hall of Fame in Charlotte, NC, including former legendary drivers Jeff Gordon, Alan Kulwicki and Davey Allison, along with fellow longtime team owner Jack Roush. The 2019 honorees represent the 10th class of the NASCAR Hall of Fame.

First competing in NASCAR as a driver in the early 60s before becoming a team owner and also a race track operator and promoter, Penske has one of the most unique and diverse legacies in the history of the sport.

The man affectionately known as “The Captain” won a NASCAR Pacific Coast race at Riverside in 1963 and that began a long and storied history of winning in stock car racing for Penske.

Through the 2018 season – the 52nd year of competition for Team Penske – Roger Penske’s teams have produced 182 victories in NASCAR’s two premiere series, including winning the Daytona 500 with Ryan Newman in 2008 and Joey Logano in 2015. Team Penske won its first Cup Series title in 2012 with Brad Keselowski and Logano is the reigning Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series champion after a dramatic run to the crown last season. Keselowski also won the NASCAR XFINITY Series (NXS) title in 2010 and Team Penske has earned four NXS Owner championships in the last six seasons.

In addition to his accomplishments as a team owner, Penske and his organization served as one of NASCAR’s top track owners and race promoters for years at popular venues including Michigan International Speedway, California Speedway, North Carolina Speedway and Nazareth Speedway.

Penske reflected on his history in the sport during Friday night’s induction ceremony.

“This Hall of Fame honor and this moment is very special to me, and I am so glad to share it with my family and friends,” said Penske. “Racing has been a part of my life almost as long as I can remember. It is a common thread that is woven throughout all of our Penske business. Racing is simply who we are.”

NASCAR posted this video clip on their Facebook page from Roger Penske’s Hall of Fame speech:

As Team Penske prepares to defend it Cup Series crown in 2019, Penske was proud to be honored with four other NASCAR icons and take his place in the hallowed halls of the NASCAR Hall of Fame.

Women in Automotive 2018

Penske Automotive Group is proud to have female leaders at every level of the organization. From Service Advisors and Sales Managers to General Managers and Fixed Operations Directors, the retail automotive industry offers women an exciting place to forge a career. Beyond the numbers, this is about unleashing the power of our people and utilizing their unique talents, experiences, and backgrounds to create an engaging work environment and world-class operation. Featured Female Leader: Michelle Petrenko – General Manager

“If you want something, go get it.”

Michelle Petrenko has worked in the automotive industry for 20 years and is the General Manager of a Honda dealership. Michelle tells everyone her job is “to keep the ball out of the net” – people laugh but it’s true. “I am here to remove any obstacle that keeps my team from succeeding and eliminate anything that prevents my customers from having a world-class experience.” When asked who has had the biggest influence on her career, Michelle recalled several people. “My first GM taught me that no one person was bigger than the entire team and that every single person from the valet to the General Manager were equal partners in the success of the business.” When she first came to Penske, Michelle said her fellow managers, supported her and taught her the things she needed to be successful. “Someone asked me once, what was the best thing, my then GM, ever gave me and I said a fair chance. He was tough on me when needed, celebrated my victories, and supported my vision to become a General Manager. And of course, Roger Penske. He has built a world-class organization that has allowed me to make all my dreams come true.” Michelle once attended a lecture where Margaret Thatcher, Prime Minister of the UK, spoke on her experiences and obstacles that she faced in her career. She said “no matter what happens – don’t be afraid and don’t give up.” Michelle was 31 at the time but the speech had a lasting impact on her. When asked what advice she would give to a young woman considering a career in automotive: “My license plate says “GO GET IT” for a reason. I always say if you want something go get it, and don’t let your fears overtake your dreams.” Michelle believes the automotive industry has evolved to empower all people and offers a lot of opportunity and flexibility. “Whether you have an interest in accounting, sales, management, customer relations or automotive repair, it truly is an exciting and rewarding career path.”

“You’ll never notice the years flying by when you love what you do”

Julie Andresen has worked in the automotive industry for more than 16 years and currently serves as a Fixed Operations Director. Julie started her automotive career as a part-time employee in the loaner vehicle department and says the fast-paced environment and constant change is what initially drew her in. “Every day there is a new challenge to overcome, new products to figure out, and new processes to create,” she says. Julie has had several proud moments throughout her career. Her most memorable one is being nominated for, and graduating from, the Penske NADA Academy in 2017. Julie has had several big influencers throughout her career and feels extremely fortunate to work with some “incredibly talented people”. “I have been taught by many within our company that we make each other better – and I try to live that every day with my team.” Julie advises young woman considering a career in the automotive industry to “not let the fact that this is a male-dominated industry dissuade you. Your success will be driven by your own performance, positivity and teamwork.” In the next five years, Julie hopes to be leading a team to record-breaking achievements as General Manager in a Penske store. “When I started in the automotive industry there were not many women in the service department or management roles. Now, in this market, I am proud to say women represent 40% of our service department teams in the San Diego/Escondido area. I have been very fortunate in terms of the acceptance and opportunity this organization has given me and I am grateful to my longtime colleagues for their trust and acceptance through my climb.”

Shelley Hulgrave has been with Penske Automotive Group for 12 years and currently serves as the Corporate Controller. Continuing to grow in her career and being promoted to Controller, while being able to prioritize both family and career, has been one of her proudest achievements. Shelley advises young women considering a career in automotive industry to “identify strong mentors early in your career and stay close with them. Most importantly, be confident in your abilities. Your strengths will carry you in times of uncertainty.” Shelley offered her view on how the automotive industry landscape has changed and evolved to engage more women. “Penske is a great example of squashing the notion that the automotive industry isn’t a place for women,” she says. “Our company has focused on hiring more women, and is a great example of women empowering other women”. What is the best career advice she ever received? “I was once told that people are happiest in their careers when they trust their leadership to guide the organization.” When asked who has had the biggest influence on her career, Shelley recalled several people. “A lot of great mentors, peers, and family members have influenced and supported me in my career. Right out of college, I was formally assigned a mentor at my first job and she initially helped me navigate my first year in that company. Throughout my career, she has continued to provide advice and modeled herself as a great professional and working mom. Since then, I have been extremely fortunate with the support of my leadership and my team at Penske. I also have a supportive husband who helps with the everyday balance of work and family.” Looking ahead five years, Shelley noted that the automotive industry is expecting a lot of change. “I hope to continue supporting those changes and our company from a finance and personnel perspective, as well as continue to grow and learn both as a person and a professional.”

Women in the Driver’s Seat: Margaret Lane

Women in Automotive 2018

Penske Automotive Group is proud to have female leaders at every level of the organization. From Service Advisors and Sales Managers to General Managers and Fixed Operations Directors, the retail automotive industry offers women an exciting place to forge a career. Beyond the numbers, this is about unleashing the power of our people and utilizing their unique talents, experiences, and backgrounds to create an engaging work environment and world-class operation. Featured Female Leader: Margaret Lane – Senior Vice President of Human Resources-East Region

“Step outside your comfort zone and raise your hand”
Margaret Lane has worked in the automotive industry for over 25 years. In her current role, Margaret focuses on aligning company objectives, values and initiatives with management and employees. “I feel proud to come to work each day with a Human Resources team that provides employees with a great experience resulting in leading metrics and hiring the best talent,” she says. Margaret doesn’t hesitate when asked who has been the biggest influence on her career. “I was fortunate to have a Dad who allowed me to appreciate a family business with his work ethic. He also encouraged me to see the world from the employee perspective as well as in terms of company goals.” Margaret’s advice for young women considering a career in the auto industry is to step outside your comfort zone and always raise your hand. “While our industry is predominately male, Penske Automotive Group accepts women who want to achieve and is willing to promote from within no matter gender, race or ethnicity. Be confident, step outside your comfort zone and raise your hand — you never know what you can achieve if you don’t try.” Asked how the automotive industry landscape has changed to engage more women, Margaret says: “I believe as an industry we recognize the importance of women taking primary roles — Aston Martin and General Motors are great examples where women have taken on senior positions. In doing this, business leaders and women are able to see that you can start at an entry or mid-level position, and work your way up, knowing there are others to support and encourage you.”
